According to Google Maps it’s about a 25 minute walk to the Acropolis North Gate, our intended starting point for exploring the Acropolis Slopes and Parthenon so we started walking from the apartment. At the nearby rank we asked a taxi driver about getting to the bus station tomorrow, for our trip to Delphi . . . one thing led to another and at only €10 we decided to take a taxi up to the Acropolis today as well, since it will be a long walk out in the midday sun.
After buying our rather expensive tickets we set out up the steps. It was busy but not too crowded and there was a lovely cool breeze meaning we could stroll across the large site in the sunshine to admire views across the city and marvel at the spectacular feats of engineering to build the Parthenon and other temples. We agreed that our favourite is the small, square Temple to Athena and Nike. There’s evidence of sensitive reconstruction with work continuing in full view but at the same time fairly unobtrusive.
After several hours, we clambered down the steps of the upper South Slope and wandered further down to find a restaurant for a late lunch before strolling back to the apartment. On the way we made a brief stop for a beer. It seems everywhere uses LPG and we saw the big refill bottles being carried around on scooters x3 at a time!
Spent the evening making supper from leftovers and packing ready to leave for Delphi tomorrow.
