Acropolis Museum, Athens

After much deliberation we decided to visit the museum first as context for going to the Acropolis tomorrow. It’s well worth the ticket price and, given the long walk to get there, handy to try their reasonably priced restaurant before and after our visit. The Museum has a spectacular architectural design, built in 2007 to house all the finds from the Acropolis and display the layers of excavation which you can see through a glass floor and by going down to a lower level beneath the full site.

The slope on the inside first floor is designed to reflect the Southern Slope of the Acropolis itself. It also has a full floor exhibition space presenting all the Parthenon friezes, including copies of those in the British Museum (and marked as such! Our walk back took us past several churches and after a long walking day we returned to the apartment to cook supper as the sun went down.

Our apartment is in a fairly run-down part of the city with some interesting shops and apartment buildings as well as cafes, bars and an excellent bakery.
